By the end of 2015 there were 159 insurance institutions operating in the People’s Republic of China, of which less than 34% were foreign-funded or joint ventures. In the traditional insurance subsectors like life insurance and property insurance, there is high concentration, with the top four or five companies accounting for more than half of the market. However, the market share of these top companies has been gradually declining over the past few years despite increasing revenues, due to the government policy towards diversifying the market. Total Gross Written Premiums (GWP) in mainland China’s insurance market grew by a little more than 20% y/y in 2015 and the industry seems to be well set on continuing this trend in 2016. Given the difficult situation with maintaining economic growth, the industry is likely to receive help from the central government as it is seen as one of the motors of China’s economy and the government will surely want to assure that the high growth rates it exhibits remain stable.
