China Insurance Sector Report 2016 4th Quarter

By the end of 2016 there were 163 insurance institutions operating in the People’s Republic of China, of which roughly 30% were foreign-funded or joint ventures. Traditional insurance subsectors such as life insurance and property insurance are highly concentrated, with the top four or five companies accounting for more than half of the insurance market’s gross written premiums (GWP). However, the market share of these top companies has been gradually declining over the past few years, despite increasing revenues, due to the government policy towards diversifying the market. Total GWP in mainland China’s insurance market grew by a little more than 20% y/y in 2015 and the industry continued the trend in 2016. By the end of November 2016 the GWP reached RMB 2,886.5bn, increasing by 28.8% y/y and is estimated to have reached or even exceed RMB 3,150bn for the year. In 2017 the industry’s growth will depend on external factors like the recovery of the global economy and the possible confrontation over various economic issues with the new US administration. Given the difficult situation with maintaining economic growth, the sector is likely to receive help from the central government as it is seen as one of the motors of China’s economy. The government will surely want to assure that the high growth rates it exhibits remain stable.
