After slowing down in the last quarter of 2020, the growth of China’s insurance sector picked up pace in Q1 2021. The premium income from January to March 2021 grew by 7.8% y/y, compared to 1.8% in Q4 2020. However, the sector has not fully recovered from the pandemic impact yet as the kickoff sales did not last throughout the first quarter with premium growth decelerating in March. Also, the increase of insurance payments was 30% y/y, much higher than premium growth. This suggested the payment was weighing on insurers’ profitability.​
