China Insurance Sector Report 2021 3rd Quarter

After a steady growth in Q1 2021, China’s insurance sector contracted significantly in Q2 2021. The premium income from April to June 2021 dropped by 13.2% y/y, compared to a rise of 7.8% in Q1 2021. The premium slump in Q2 dragged the growth in the first half of 2021 to 4.2% y/y, compared to 6.5% in the same period of 2020 when China’s economy was hit by the pandemic. The sector’s contraction started in March when premium growth decelerated after the kickoff sales. Meanwhile, the insurance payment increased by 9.2% y/y in Q2 2021, continuing to weigh on insurers’ profitability. The tapering base effect in Q2 was a crucial reason for the downturn in this period; other than this, the weak consumption recovery and the struggling life insurance reform also contributed to the decline.​
