China’s output of steel and steel products climbed by 0.5% y/y to 514.4mn tonnes in Q2 2016, after three consecutive quarters of production decline. The manufacture of steel products increased by 1.8% y/y and was the main driving factor for the revival in the quarter. The prices on the domestic market inched up in the second quarter but remained below the average 2015 level. As a result, revenues declined by 5.9% y/y to RMB 1.6tn in Q2. Total profit remained positive at RMB 54bn, up by 2.3% y/y. It was supported by an 8.4% y/y reduction of costs to just under RMB 1.5tn in Q2 2016. Exports of steel products declined in value terms, but soared by 10.6% y/y in volume terms to 29.4mn tonnes.
