China Iron and Steel Sector Report 2021 1st Quarter

In the fourth quarter of 2020, the sales volume and sales revenue of China’s steel products reached 213.8mn tonnes and RMB 1,543.7bn, representing y/y increases of 27.8% and 38.5%, respectively. The demand for steel products in China is closely correlated with the performance of machinery, automobile, and construction sectors. According to the China Iron and Steal Association (CISA), these three sectors consume nearly 80% of the country’s total steel output. In the fourth quarter of 2020, the added values created by China’s machinery and automobile sectors ascended by 13.9% y/y and 11.2% y/y, respectively. Furthermore, driven by a set of positive policies, such as new-type urbanisation, new infrastructure construction, and rural vitalisation strategy, the gross output value achieved by China’s construction sector increased by 11.7% y/y in the same period. Consequently, in the fourth quarter, the demand for steel products significantly increased, resulting in the sales rise in volume and value terms in the country’s steel market.​
