China is the world’s largest producer of paper and paperboard, with a production volume of 123.2mn tonnes in 2016. The sector accounts for 0.5% of China’s total fixed asset investment and 1.4% of its industrial employment. The paper manufacturing sector in China can be broadly divided in to two subsectors, manufacturing of pulp, paper and paperboard and paper products manufacturing. The largest segment is the production of machine-made paper, which accounts for 52% of the sector’s output. In the past five years the Chinese paper manufacturing sector has been undergoing a transition period of slow growth and saturation on the market, with the average growth of sales revenue slowing down from 19.3% y/y in 2007-2011 to 4.5% y/y in 2012-2016.
