China is the world’s second-largest retail market and a global leader in e-commerce. Despite the slowdown of China’s economy, the sector offers bright prospects, particularly due to the rising spending power of Chinese consumers. In the first three quarters of 2016, the average consumption expenditure per capita reached RMB 12,247, recording a 8.5% y/y increase. Consumption expenditure stood at RMB 16,797 per capita in urban areas and RMB 7,017 in rural areas. In the first nine months of2016, total retail sales rose 10.4% y/y to RMB 23,848bn (USD 3,472.6bn). The year-on-year growth in retail sales was higher in rural areas and stood at 10.9%. Urban retail sales rose by 10.3% y/y. Online retail sales of goods accounted for 11.7% of the sector’s total sales for the first three quarters of the year and reached RMB 2,795bn.
