China’s rubber products sector witnessed a 21.5% y/y decline in sales to RMB 198bn in the first quarter of 2018 on the back of falling production. Sales of the largest subsector – tyres – shrank by 22.4% y/y to RMB 107.8bn, while the revenues of the second and third largest subsectors - rubber plate, hose & belting, and rubber accessories - went down by 16.6% y/y and 25.4% y/y, totalling RMB 26.3bn and RMB 17.5bn, respectively, in January to March 2018. § The sector’s total profit also declined, falling by 29.4% y/y to RMB 10.1bn in Q1 2018, as a result of rising prices of raw materials such as carbon black, additives used in rubber products, steel cords and others. According to the NBS data, the number of loss-making enterprises in the rubber sector reached 705 at the end of Q1 2018, compared to 544 in the same period of 2017. In the tyre subsector the number of loss-making enterprises increased to 118 at the end of Q1 2018 from 92 at the end of Q1 2017. Rising operating costs and environment-led production cuts forced a large number of tyre producers to increase their prices.
