Colombia’s banking sector, comprising commercial banks, financial corporations, financing companies and financial cooperatives, has proved resilient to the economic slowdown the country has suffered since 2014. Despite the challenges faced by the economy, such as the fall in the international oil prices that widened the fiscal deficit, coupled with the high volatility in the exchange rate and interest rates, the sector continued to grow, with the value of outstanding deposits and loans growing by 10% y/y and 14% y/y, respectively, as of June 2016. The pace of growth, however, weakened from the pre-crisis compound annual growth rate (CAGR) levels of 15% and 16% over 2011-2014. Still, the indicators for portfolio quality, solvency, liquidity and profitability remained stable in 2015 and the first nine months of 2016.
