Colombia’s oil and gas sector was among the main drivers of domestic economy over the period 2010-2014, with its value added expanding at a CAGR of 6.8%, well above the country’s average annual GDP growth of 5% over the same period. However, in 2015, the growth rate of the sector fell to 1.3% y/y, stemming from the downward trend in international oil prices, which hampered exploration activities. During the year, exports of crude oil, the major export product, contracted by more than 50% y/y to USD 12.9bn, which narrowed the overall trade surplus of the oil and gas sector to USD 9.3bn in 2015, down from USD 21.6bn in 2014. Low oil prices were also the key factor in the contraction by about 57% y/y of the sector’s contribution to public revenues, explained by an 80% y/y decrease in the value of income taxes and a 33% drop in royalty payments.
