Indonesia is home to a well-capitalised but fragmented banking sector with obvious market leaders. A total of 116 commercial and more than 1,800 rural banks operated in the country in 2016. Indonesia’s four state banks accounted for some 55% of bank offices in 2016, leaving a share of 26% to the most numerous banking player group – that of private national banks. Lending by multi-finance companies is widespread in the country, where 201 multi-finance companies operated in 2016. The top 20 heldnearly 65% of the market in the same year. Pawn lending is traditional in Indonesia and the country operates a government-owned pawnshop, PT Pegadaian (Persero). Some 4,000 private pawnbusinesses operate without a licence, catering for the needs of Indonesia’s 60% unbanked population.
