The wholesale and retail trade sector is one of the main engines of economic growth in Indonesia. The sector generated 13% of the country’s GDP in 2020 with household consumption taking a 58% share in GDP. Almost 25mn people are occupied in the sector, equivalent to 18% of the total workforce in 2020. A 2019 ranking by A.T. Kearney placed the country as the fifth most attractive emerging retail market. About half of total household consumption expenditure per capita is on food as income levels are generally low by international standards. During the pandemic in 2020, Indonesia’s retail sales fell by 11.7% y/y. Spending on essentials suffered least, as evident from the fact that food sales declined by just 2.8% y/y, while sales of household equipment shrank by 18% y/y and clothing sales dropped by 60% y/y.
