The oil and gas sector is an important driver of growth for the energy-hungry Indonesian economy. However, the sector’s contribution to the domestic economy has declined over the past couple of years reflecting declining production and depleting fields. In 2019, the sector’s gross value added (GVA) accounted for 4.9% of the nominal GDP, down from 8% in 2014. And while the country managed to keep its place among the top producers of oil and gas in the Asia Pacific region, it started to lose ground globally, falling to ninth position in terms of LNG exports in 2018, down two places from 2018. Exports of oil and gas took a 7.5% share in the total in 2019, while imports of oil and gas accounted for 12.8%.
