The country ranked fifth in terms of quality of overall infrastructure in Southeast Asia, according to the World Economic Forum (WEF) Global Competitiveness Report in 2019. The country ranks ahead of Vietnam, the Philippines and Cambodia and Laos but falls behind Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei and Thailand. The sector is seen as strategically important by the government and the authorities are pursuing an ambitious infrastructure spending programme for the construction of roads, bridges, air and seaports, as well as railway infrastructure facilities.
