India is the 2nd largest producer and consumer of cement in the world after China, with nearly 390 million tonnes of cement production capacity in 2015. Since 1992, the country’s annual cement production increased by more than five times to 271 million tonnes in FY2015 from 50 million tonnes in FY2007, driven by the rapid growth in the infrastructure and construction sectors over this period. The industry is structured in unevenly distributed clusters, located close to raw material deposits. The cement industry is expected to grow in the mid to long term, supported by the large investments in infrastructure and housing the government has planned by 2022.
