The agriculture sector contributed 7.3% to Malaysia’s GDP in 2019, down from 8.3% in 2015 and 10% in 2010. With a share of 36.5%, palm oil was the major contributor to agricultural sector GDP in 2019, followed by livestock (15.9%), and fishing (12.5%). The share of rubber has declined substantially over recent years to only 3.03% in 2019. Other prominent agriculture activities include the cultivation of paddy, fruits and vegetables, and cereals. Commercial crops such as palm oil, rubber, and cocoa are primarily grown by large companies while food crops are largely grown by smallholders. The sector, comprising plantations and other agriculture activities, employed approximately 20% of Malaysia’s 2mn officially registered foreign workers as of August 2019. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of food security in the country.
