Malaysia Consumer Goods and Retail Sector Report 2019/2020

An EMIS Insights Industry Report
EMIS is an ISI Emerging Markets Group Company
Date: October 2019
Pages: 83
Available in: English

Total household expenditures in Malaysia have been growing at a CAGR of 9.4% from 2014 to 2018, reflecting a still-growing consumer goods and retail sector despite a turbulent political environment that saw Malaysia’s first change of government since its independence from Britain. Malaysia’s food production is insufficient to meet domestic demand and the MYR depreciation by approximately 20.8% from January 2014 to December 2018 has contributed to the increase in the proportion of household spending on food and non-alcoholic beverages. This has constrained the ability of lower-tomiddle income households to spend on non-essential items. In contrast, middle-to-upper income households have been increasing their discretionary spending in line with their increased income.

This report provides a complete and detailed analysis of the retail sector for Malaysia. EMIS Insights presents in-depth business intelligence in a standard format across countries and regions, providing a balanced mix between analysis and data.
