Accounting for 3% of total GVA of the economy in 2018, the financial intermediation and insurance sector in Romania is still underdeveloped by EU standards (4.8% for the EU28). The banking sector, which represents about 75% of the financial system, has recuperated in recent years after a period of stagnation following the financial crisis. In 2018 the net assets of the sector grew swiftly by 5.5% y/y, although still behind nominal GDP growth. The robust economic growth supported acceleration in lending activity, with loans to the private sector growing by 8% y/y, and a sustained solid increase in private sector deposits, up by 9% y/y. The liquidity of the system remained high, as financial stability was further enhanced by another year of improvement in the ratio of non-performing loans (NPL) to 4.96% and good capital adequacy, the total capital ratio standing at 20.7% at end-2018.
