The railway system in Bosnia and Herzegovina consists of two companies, the Railways of Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (ZFBiH) and Republika Srpska Railways (ZRS).
Zeljeznice FBiH, established in 1998 after merging with Zeljeznice Herceg-Bosne, is the railway monopoly of Bosnia's Muslim-Croat Federation.
The total length of the Bosnian railways network is 1,032 kilometres, out of which 59% is operated by ZFBiH.
The two main stations in the federation are Zenica (108,000 passengers) and Sarajevo (24,000 passengers in 2001).
The railways operator posted total revenue of KM 86.4 million in 2004, up 36.7% on the year, and total costs of KM 135.8 million, up 14.2% from 2003.
Zeljeznice FBiH carried 231,000 passengers in 2004, up 4.0% on the year.
The volume of transported cargo in 2004 was 5.31 million tonnes, or 2.12 times higher than in 2003. Out of these, 2.11 million tonnes were from international traffic.
The Bosnian railways' passenger traffic is forecast to reach 77.5 million passenger-kilometre (pkm) in 2005 and 145.2 million pkm in 2010.
The freight traffic on the Bosnian railways is expected to reach 442.2 million tonskilometre (tkm) in 2005 and 646.1 million tkm in 2010.
In December 2004, Zeljeznice FbiH announced plans to order nine loco-hauled trainsets from Spanish Patentes Talgo to operate services from Sarajevo to Ploce, Belgrade, Zagreb, Budapest and possibly Munich.
According to local media, the price of the deal stands at EUR 67 million and Zeljeznice will seek Spanish government financing for the deal under a 1.0% interest rate, 30-year repayment period with a 10-year grace period.
