Cosmetics producer Aroma was established in 1924 as one of the first cosmetics factories in the country. The company exports to over 50 countries worldwide and generates over 70% of its turnover abroad.
In February 1996, Bulgaria's Privatisation Agency sold a 67% stake in Aroma to local cosmetics trader Astera Ltd. for USD 7.93 million. The ownership transition was halted for several months by the former management, which claimed that plant had been sold illegally because the sell-off agency had not considered a bid for the firm made by Aroma's employees. In 2002, Astera transferred its stake in Aroma to Plovdiv-based company Sinel. In October 2007, Bulgarian drug maker Sopharma bought 6.01% in Aroma for an undisclosed sum. Earlier the same month, Telecomplect, which owns 20.4% of Sopharma, bought 5.0% of Aroma's capital for BGN 258,200 (EUR 188,770).
Aroma manufactures a wide range of health care products, perfumes and cosmetics. The production facilities of the company are located in the capital Sofia and span over a total area of 85,000 square meters. The production is organized into several industrial units - packaging, hair color, cosmetics, toothpaste, shampoo, soaps. Aroma also offers its products through its own retail chain, which comprises stores in Sofia, Sandanski and Velingrad.
