Bulgaria's largest bread and bakery products manufacturer Dobrudzhanski Hlyab, which was established in 1934, specialises in the production of variety of breads, pastries and cakes. The company, which was nationalised in 1947, produces over 50 types of bread.
In March 1995, the state-owned bakery in the north-eastern town of Dobrich was sold to a management-employee buyout company. The majority stake was later acquired by the plant's manager Encho Malev. Shortly after the sell-off, the company launched a flour mill with a daily production capacity of 150 tonnes of flour. In 2000, Dobrudzhanski Hlyab was the first local bread producer to launch sliced bread equipment. In May 2004, the company opened a EUR 1.0 million bread production unit in the Black Sea port of Varna, which has a capacity of 4,500 breads per hour.
