Bulgaria's magnetic storage device producer DZU was set up in 1968 for disk drives manufacturing.
It was a huge supplier of magnetic storage devices for the ex-Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.
In 1989, the company's production volume was estimated at USD 1.620 billion and DZU posted the highest profit of all companies operating in Bulgaria.
However, the company accumulated huge debts after the disintegration of former communist trade block COMECOM in 1990.
Bulgaria's MG Elit Holding acquired 31.15% in DZU under the country's voucher privatisation programme in 1997.
The remaining shares were purchased by individuals.
In May 1999, Bulgaria's Privatisation Agency sold 48% in the hi-tech company to Hungary's Videoton Holding for USD 54,200.
The Hungarian consumer electronics group, which was the only bidder for DZU, pledged to invest USD 645,161 in the company over a three-year period.
In 2000, DZU launched a project with U.S. computer giant IBM for HDD salvage inspection.
In 2001, the company started a household appliances assembly project with Dutch firm Philips Electronics.
In 2003 and 2004 the company produced electronic devices for EATON Electric and signed a contract with SENSUS, Germany for production of water measuring devices.
Currently, the company also offers services such as project management, engineering and logistics. In 2009 it opened a new logistics centre in Stara Zagora.
