The Electricity System Operator (ESO) was set up on January 4, 2007 and is a one hundred percent subsidiary of state-owned Bulgarian Energy Holding.
ESO is engaged in general operational planning, coordination and control of the national electrical power grid of the Republic of Bulgaria, including common operation with the electrical power systems of other countries. The company is also responsible for the operation, maintenance and reliable functioning of the power transmission network. The operator is also involved in the transit of electricity and organization of the electric power market.
