Bulgarian cooking oil company Kaliakra, based in the north-eastern town of Dobrich, is controlled by Bunge, one of the world's largest oilseed processor.
In 1996, the state sold 55% in the company to local MK Olivia and 25% in the company were acquired by individuals. Bunge's French vegetable oil producer Cereol acquired in end-2002 a 65% stake in Olivia.
In February 2003, Cereol sold the margarine-making unit of Kaliakra to the Bulgarian arm of Anglo-Dutch group Unilever.
In 2007 Kaliakra AD merged with MK Olivia AD. In July 2007 the Board of Directors took the decision to stop some of the business activities of the company - crushing, refining, bottling. The company continued to trade and store agricultural products as well as to import and distribute Kaliakra bottled oil, manufactured by Hungary-based Bunge ZRT.
