National Company Railway Infrastructure (NCRI) was set up in 2002 by the Bulgarian government in a move intended to end the railway transport monopoly of the Bulgarian State Railways BDZ.
As a result, BDZ, a company established back in 1888, was split into two entities – one managing the state railway infrastructure (NCRI) and another railway carrier (BDZ EAD).
National Company Railway Infrastructure is engaged in the development, reconstruction, maintenance and operation of the railway infrastructure. It is also responsible for the development of the timetables, coordinated with the railway carriers.
In August 2007, the Bulgarian State Commission of Energy and Water Regulations decided to give NCRI subsidiary Tren a ten-year license to trade electricity. The document enabled Tren to sell electricity to the Bulgarian State Railways (BDZ EAD) at a minimal profit.
