Austrian oil and gas group OMV set foot in Bulgaria in 1998. The Sofia-based unit is engaged in the wholesale and retail distribution of petroleum products. The company`s main activity includes the construction and operation of gasoline stations.
In May 2005, OMV opened a EUR 8.0 million, 10-tank petrol terminal in Bulgaria's capital to streamline its wholesale and transportation activities in the country. The Sofia terminal has a storage capacity of 8,300 cubic metres of petrol and diesel fuel. In June 2006, OMV bought an oil terminal with a fuel storage capacity of some 6,700 cubic metres in the Bulgarian Danube port of Vidin for EUR 4.0 million. In July 2007, OMV and Bulgarian state-owned gas company Bulgargaz Holding agreed in principle to cooperate in gas exploration in the Black Sea.
OMV runs more than 90 gas stations throughout the country under the OMV and Avanti trade marks.
