Payner, which was incorporated in 1990, is a private music content company that has business interests into three fundamental areas - recorded music, music publishing and television broadcasting. Its recorded music business operations consist of the discovery and development of artists and the related marketing and distribution of recorded music produced by such artists. The music publishing business includes managing the rights of tens of thousands of musical compositions, almost exclusively from the chalga genre.
Chalga is a form of Bulgarian popular music drawing from Balkan folk traditions and incorporating Arab, Turkish, Greek and Roma influences, as well as motifs from Balkan traditional music.
Since 2000, the company has a branch office in the capital Sofia. The company runs 6 music stores - three "Payner" in Dimitrovgrad, Pleven and Gabrovo, and three more called "Planeta" in Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna.
In December 2001, Payner launched a music TV channel called Planeta. Payner broadcasts its TV programme through its own network, cable system and through its direct-to-home (DTH) satellite services or through other cable and satellite providers in neighbouring Macedonia, Albania, several EU member states, Australia and New Zealand. In July 2006, the company entered into an agreement with pay TV operator Home2US Communications, Inc. to broadcast the Planeta TV programme in the United States and Canada.
