Sofia Airport is the biggest international airport in Bulgaria. Letishte Sofia EAD provides passenger, baggage, aircraft, cargo and mail handling services to more than 65 air companies operating flights to and from Sofia. Sofia Airport EAD is a licensed operator of the duty-free and travel-retail shops in both passenger terminals.
Currently the airport has 2 passenger terminals. In December 2002, Germany's Strabag International GmbH won a tender to build the second passenger terminal at the airport worth EUR 110.6 million. The existing passenger terminal at the airport was built in 1940 and since then has undergone several expansions and modernisations. The new terminal, which was opened at the end of 2006, is designed to have a capacity of 2.5 million passengers a year and a peak-hour rate of 2,000 passengers.
