Bulgarian alternative telecoms operator Vestitel BG was established in 2003 by local gas retailer Overgas. The company provides telecommunications services through its own optical network, as well as via partners' optical network. Vestitel offers Internet, fixed voice and data services.
In August 2004, the operator won a 20-year licence for fixed-line telecom and carrier operations issued by the local telecoms watchdog. In May 2005, Vestitel BG won a license to extend a fibre-optic telecommunications line into neighbouring Greece as part of a EUR 8.0 million project to link its domestic network with global telecoms operators. In November 2006, Vestitel started operating a fibre-optic telecommunications line that links Bulgarian capital Sofia and the Greek port of Thessaloniki.
