Empresa de Desarrollo Pesquero de Chile S.A. is a company located in Santiago, Chile. It was incorporated on October 11, 1978, as a joint venture between Japanese and Chilean capital. The company's history began in 1976 when Nippon Suisan Kaisha Ltda. from Japan sought new sources of marine products and obtained the necessary legal authorizations from the fishing and maritime authorities in Chile. They established fishing grounds in the southern area of the Chilean sea, which were previously unexplored for demersal fishing. The company initially operated with two factory ships, the "Kirishima" and the "Fuji," based in Valparaíso and later in Punta Arenas. Over the years, the company replaced its original factory ships with more modern ones suitable for the technology and resource conditions. Currently, Empresa de Desarrollo Pesquero de Chile S.A. operates with two factory ships, the "UNZEN" and the "UNIONSUR" (Surimero), which have a displacement of around 5,000 TRG and are used for the production of all the company's products.
