It was formed in 1970 as a Shipbuilding Project known as Cochin Shipyard Project. In 1972, Government of India formed a wholly owned company Cochin Shipyard Limited to take over the Cochin Shipyard Project. The work for setting up of the Shipyard commenced in April 1972 in technical tie up with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries of Japan. The Shipyard was partially operational since 1976 and was fully completed in 1982.
Cochin Shipyard is engaged in construction of Marine Vessels and Marine Crude Oil Tankers. Besides it is a major center in India to undertake ship repairs in large scale. The Shipyard has since inception constructed and delivered five Panamax type bulk carriers of 75,000 DWT each and two LR-II type crude oil tankers of 86,000 DWT each, the largest ship ever built in the country. The yard has updated its shipbuilding technology on Japanese lines with the construction of crude oil tankers. The yard has so far repaired 679 vessels of all descriptions.
