The Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) was constituted as Nairobi Stock Exchange in 1954 as a voluntary association of stockbrokers in the European community registered under the Societies Act. The Nairobi Stock Exchange is poised to play an increasingly important role in the Kenyan economy, especially in the privatization of state-owned enterprises. In the last 10 years, 9 public enterprises have been successfully privatized through the NSE where the government has raised about Kshs. 5-billion. The NSE is sub-Saharan Africa's fourth-largest bourse.
