Caja Popular Villanueva S.C. de A.P. de R.L. de C.V. is a financial cooperative founded in Ruiz, Nayarit in 1971 by the priests Juan García Lepe Ayón and Felipe de Jesús Inda. It started as a group in formation on the grounds of the local parish. In 1973, it was named Caja Popular and in 1977, it became part of the Federation of Occidente (UNISAP), to which it is currently affiliated. In 1983, it obtained legal protection under Mexican laws and became an Association Civil. In 1985, it acquired land for the construction of its own offices, which were inaugurated in October 1986. In May 2000, it underwent another legal transformation to become a Limited Cooperative Society with Variable Capital (S.C.L. de C.V.). In March 2010, it changed its legal name again to become a Limited Liability Cooperative Savings and Loan Society with Variable Capital (S.C. de A.P. de R.L. de C.V.). Caja Popular Villanueva operates in accordance with the "Law that Regulates the Activities of Cooperative Savings and Loan Societies (LRASCAP)" and its modifications published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) to date. It is part of the UNISAP Network, a federation of popular savings and loan cooperatives that represents and advises them. In June 2011, it was designated as a Financial Cooperative.
