The Autoridad del Canal de Panamá (ACP) is an autonomous public entity of the Republic of Panama responsible for the administration, operation, maintenance, modernization, and development of the Panama Canal. Its mission is to ensure the safe, continuous, efficient, and profitable operation of the interoceanic waterway, which is a critical link in global maritime trade. ACP also manages water resources that serve both the Canal and nearly half of Panama’s population. ACP is 100% owned by the Republic of Panama and operates under a special constitutional regime established by Title XIV of the Panamanian Constitution and Law No. 19 of 1997. The Panama Canal was inaugurated in 1914 under U.S. administration and remained under U.S. control until 1999, when it was transferred to Panama. The Autoridad del Canal de Panamá (ACP) was created to manage the Canal as a financially autonomous and self-sustaining entity. Since then, ACP has modernized operations, completed the Panama Canal Expansion in 2016, and implemented sustainability strategies to address water scarcity and climate change. In 2024, ACP continued to demonstrate resilience and efficiency, projecting 13,900 vessel transits and a budget of B/.5,623.5 million for fiscal year 2025.
