The University of Lodz was established on May 24, 1945 as a continuator of the achievements and traditions of the Teacher Institute (1921-1928) in Łódź, the Higher School of Social and Economic Sciences (1924-1928), and the branch of Free Polish University (1928-1939). The initiator of the establishment of a university university in Łódź, under the original name of "State University - Free University", was prof. Teodor Vieweger, rector of the Free Polish University. The first rectors of the University of Lodz were eminent representatives of Polish science: Tadeusz Kotarbiński, Józef Chałasiński, and Jan Szczepański.
