The Central Institute for Informatics (ICI) as main centre for advanced research in informatics was found in 1970. 1985 - ICI becomes the "Informatics" directorate within the Institute for Scientific Research and Technological Engineering for Calculation Technologies and Informatics; at this stage there is an increased interest in development and capitalisation of research outcome. In 1990 Institute for Research in Informatics (ICI), reconfiguration as an independent institute and adjustment to the market economy principles, with intention to carry on the scientific research activity. Since 2001 ICI shifts under coordination of the Ministry of Communication and Information Society. The National Institute for Research & Development in Informatics represents the most important Institute for research, development and innovation in Information Technology and Communications in Romania.
