Centrotextil was established in 1946 as a textile importing and exporting company. In the period 1972-1973, it was merged with raw material testing body Tekstilni Institut Srbije, textile retailer Refleks and wholesale trader Srboteks.
Most of Centrotextil’s revenue is generated from retail sales of clothing and footwear.
The company has stakes in ten related firms of which only two are operational.
Currently, Centrotextil owns 45 retail stores, five ready-to-wear companies and 15 warehouses with a combined floor space of 51,000 square metres in 35 locations across Serbia and Montenegro. The company posted sales revenue of EUR 6.8 million in 2005.
In late February 2007, Swiss-registered Home Art&Sales Services, part of Zepter International holding, was ranked first in the privatisation tender for Centrotextil's sale. The company offered EUR 18.9 million for the 70% state-owned stake and pledged EUR 3.0 million investments.
Rival bidders included a consortium of Virgin island-registered investment fund Equest Investments Bulgaria and Austria’s Raiffeisen Investments, which ranked second, and a group of domestic companies, which came in third. The privatisation agency is expected to complete the deal by the end of March 2007.
Home Art & Sales Services bought 68.4% in Centrotextil for EUR 18.9 million in mid-April 2007.
