Africa Mining Sector Report 2023-2024

Africa's mining sector plays a crucial role driving the economic performance of a number of countries on the continent and providing over a quarter of the continent's export earnings. The continent accounted for 5.6% of the global mineral production in 2021, according to the World Mining Data 2023, an industry report published by the Austrian government. Total mineral production increased to 1,024mn tonnes in 2021 from 971mn tonnes in 2020. Africa's mining sector performed well in 2022 as the region benefited from rising prices for its metals and minerals driven by the global economic uncertainty and supply disruptions as a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The higher commodity prices helped support revenue growth for governments and mining companies on the continent. In terms of mineral production value, Africa's global share was recorded at 10% or USD 505.3bn (not including diamonds) in 2021, according to the World Mining Data. The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) expects weak global demand, high energy prices, elevated borrowing costs and disruptions to global supply chains to continue to present challenges for Africa's mining sector in 2023 and 2024. That said, the EIU expect prices for Africa's major metals and minerals exports to remain high, holding a positive outlook in particular for demand for gold, platinum group metals (PGMs), lithium, copper, cobalt, nickel and graphite. The bright outlook for platinum is echoed by the World Platinum Investment Council which forecasts global demand for platinum to increase by 27.7% in 2023, cooling to a growth of 1.5% in 2024.
