Argentina is the second-largest economy in South America after Brazil in terms of nominal GDP. It is an important consumer market with a population of over 43.6mn people, as of December 2016. During the period 2011–2016, the trade sector underperformed, with its GVA contracting by an average of 1.4%per year. This was much more than the decrease across the overall economy, where GDP dropped by an average of 0.2% per year. In 2016, trade GVA accounted for 11.9% of the country’s GDP. Trade activityin Argentina is concentrated in the supermarket channel, which accounted for 56.6% of total retail sales in 2016, followed by online retail (20%), electronics and home appliance stores (13.1%) and shopping centres (10.2%), as per EMIS Insights estimates. In line with global trends, online retail was the most dynamic channel during 2011–2016, expanding its sales at a CAGR of 19.6% in real terms (adjusted for inflation).
