According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), demand for global electricity grew by an estimated 4.3% y/y in 2024, up from 2.5% in 2023, driven by expanded electrification globally. Most of the 2024 growth came from emerging economies, especially China, which alone contributed 54% of the increase. By 2027, India will contribute 10% of global electricity demand growth, driven by strong economic activity and rising air conditioning use. Demand in advanced economies was flat between 2021 and 2024 but is expected to account for 15% of growth by 2027, fuelled by transport electrification, heating and more data centres. In the US, data centres are driving demand, while uncertainty in energy-intensive industries are affecting projections in the EU. Looking ahead to 2027, developing countries will continue to drive about 85% of global electricity demand growth, with China providing more than half of it.
