The transport sector plays a significant role in the Mexican economy, accounting for about 7.1% of the country's GDP in 2022, with the industry providing vital support for domestic economic activity. From 2017 to 2022, the transport sector's GVA surged by 1.2% in real terms, compared to a real GDP expansion of 0.4% for the same period, although some segments registered negative growth in GVA, such as maritime and inner waterways transport, with a 2.5% average contraction. Meanwhile, the GVA of air, rail and road transport surged, with CAGR's of 3.4%, 0.8% and 0.8% in real terms, respectively. In terms of cargo transport, there was a mixed performance in 2017-2022, with average contractions of 1.4% per year for maritime cargo and air cargo transport, and rather weak CAGR expansions of 0.1% and 0.2% for the road and rail cargo segments. The cargo segments of Mexico have been restrained by a diversity of factors, including security issues affecting the rail and road segments, and infrastructure capacity issues limiting the maritime segment. However, passenger transport also registered a mixed performance in 2017-2022, with only the air segment registering an expansion (of 3.6% CAGR), and the remaining segments contracting. The positive performance of air passenger transport is particularly impressive considering its major restraining factor, the fact that Mexican airports lost the Category 1 status from the FAA in May 2021, and suffered from this throughout 2022.
