The 2022/2023 season marked a significant milestone for Brazil's agribusiness sector, with record-breaking yields for grain and soybean production, robust growth in the meat export market and resilience in fish farming. The grain harvest concluded in September 2023, reaching an astounding 322.4mn tonnes, following growth of 18.3% y/y. This remarkable achievement was attributed to an expanded planted area, surpassing 78.5mn ha, and improved average productivity, which rose from 3,656 kg/ha to 4,111 kg/ha. Soybean production marked a new record high, at an estimated 154.6mn tonnes, representing a 23.1% y/y increase. According to the Brazilian Enterprise for Agricultural Research (EMBRAPA), Brazil ranks as the world's third-largest producer of fruits as of 2023, boasting an annual yield of around 45mn tonnes. The volume of production is concentrated on six key species: potatoes, tomatoes, watermelons, lettuce, onions and carrots. Family farming plays a pivotal role in the segment, responsible for over half of the total production. The meat export market in 2022 experienced remarkable expansion. Beef exports surged by 27% y/y to 1.98mn tonnes. As a result, total export value surpassed the USD 10bn threshold. The pork industry showed promising trends in 2023, as it overcame rising competition from poultry meat. Pork production was projected to reach 5.3mn tonnes in 2023, marking a 3.1% y/y increase and reaching a historical high. Despite numerous challenges in 2022, the fish farming industry recorded 2.3% y/y growth, reaching a total production of 860,355 tonnes, with tilapia contributing to approximately 64% of this production. The segment's resilience underlines the rising demand for farmed fish, both domestically and in foreign markets. These factors delineate the foundation of Brazil's thriving agribusiness sector, demonstrating its substantial potential for increased production and export. The sector's resilience amid external challenges underlines its robustness and adaptability, setting the stage for continued growth and development in the years to come.
