In 2022, Brazil's automotive sector showed mixed signs of recovery from the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Motor vehicle output registered its second consecutive annual growth rate in 2022, albeit significantly below the pre-pandemic volumes of 2019. Domestic demand for motor vehicles rebounded in 2021 (also not high enough to overcome pre-pandemic volumes), followed by an annual fall in 2022 as the recovery of Brazilian GDP in 2021 and 2022 was insufficient to foster domestic consumption of motor vehicles. As with production, motor vehicle export volumes reported annual growth rates in 2021 and 2022, boosted by a recovering foreign motor vehicle market (again, export volumes in 2022 were not high enough to surpass the pre-pandemic volumes of 2019). In spite of the relatively slow rate of recovery of the Brazilian motor vehicle industry, several vehicle makers began to restructure their operations in Brazil in order to increase the production of light commercial vehicles and to reduce excessive specialisation in small passenger cars. FDI inflow in the automotive industry reported the highest value over the 2017-2022 period. In 2023, motor vehicle output and domestic sales are expected to increase (still below pre-pandemic volumes) while motor vehicle export volume is forecast to drop.
