The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic influenced the performance of Brazil’s economy in 2020; the banking sector was no exception, reporting a drop in profitability with return on equity down 3.1pp as of September 2020 compared to December 2019. Brazil enjoyed a tepid 3.8% GDP growth in real terms from 2016 to 2019, which was halted by the worldwide health contingency. According to the November 2020 forecast by the IMF, Brazil’s GDP will contract by 5.8% y/y in 2020. As of September 2020, the Central Bank has continued to loosen the country’s monetary policy, setting the SELIC rate at 2% pa and helping to increase demand for loans. Non-financial corporation (NFC) loans have been the highlight of credit growth in 2020 with an increase of 15.6% from end-2019 to September 2020. Spreads, on the other hand, have been on a downward trend. Even as the Central Bank lowered passive interests, active interests dropped rapidly by 4.5 pp from end-2019 to Q3 2020.?
