It plays a vital role in the country's economy, accounting for 3% of national GDP and 12% of industrial GDP, while generating two million jobs (directly and indirectly) with the highest wages within the manufacturing sector. Despite its importance, the industry has faced a downturn since 2023, recording a 2.34% y/y decline in net revenue (USD 158.6bn) in 2024. Although production showed a slight recovery, marking a 3.3% y/y increase compared to 2023, the capacity utilisation index hit 58% in May 2024. Several factors have contributed to this situation, including rising raw material costs, increased tax burdens and a surge in imports.
