In 2023, the Brazilian retail sector grew, with a 1.7% y/y increase in sales volume, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). In terms of nominal revenue, there was a significant rise of 4.1% y/y. Expanding the scope to include additional retail categories, such as vehicle and motorcycle sales, parts and components, construction materials and wholesale food, beverages and tobacco products, overall retail trade growth was 2.4% y/y in terms of sales volume and 5.3% y/y for nominal revenue. The standout performer in 2023 was the expanded retail segment, particularly vehicles, motorcycles, parts and components, which saw remarkable growth of 8.1% y/y. This surge was reflected in a notable 12% y/y increase in registrations reported by the National Federation of Motor Vehicle Distribution (Fenabrave). However, certain retail segments faced challenges and declined in 2023. For instance, trade in textiles, apparel (clothing) and footwear had a 4.6% y/y decrease in sales volume, while furniture sales volume declined by 5.2% y/y. Although forecasts tend to vary, the National Confederation of Commerce (CNC) projected in February 2024 slower trade growth of 1.1% y/y for overall sales volume in 2024.
