Brazil Consumer Goods and Retail Sector Report 2025-2026

According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), Brazil's retail sector recorded strong expansion in 2024, with sales volumes rising by 4.1% y/y, a notable acceleration compared to the 1.7% increase in 2023. In nominal terms, sector revenue climbed by 8.2% y/y, reflecting both higher volumes and modest price increases. When expanding the scope to include additional retail categories - such as vehicles and motorcycles (including parts and components), construction materials and wholesale food, beverages and tobacco products - overall retail trade advanced by 3.3% in sales volume and 6.6% in nominal revenue. The pharmaceutical and cosmetics segment was the sector's top performer, achieving 13.3% growth in 2024. This was fuelled by robust demand for prescription drugs, coupled with structural drivers such as Brazil's ageing population, rising prevalence of chronic illnesses linked to lifestyle factors, and increased public investment in healthcare. Not all segments, however, shared this momentum. Office equipment and supplies contracted by 1.6% y/y, reflecting subdued demand for products such as notebooks and netbooks, as well as the ongoing structural decline in desktop PC sales. Similarly, the mobile phone retail segment remained essentially flat, as revenue was held back by the widespread availability of illegal devices, which continue to capture a significant share of the market. Nevertheless, the overall picture for Brazilian retail in 2024 was decisively positive, with broad-based gains in both sales volumes and revenues, underscoring the sector's resilience and adaptability.
