Brazil’s transport infrastructure sector contains a diverse landscape. While some sub-sectors, namely road infrastructure, are still dominated by the federal and state governments, others such as the railways have been marked by a high participation of the private sector. Meanwhile, airport and port infrastructure have seen a privatisation wave in recent years, although the federal government still plays an important role through state-run companies. In 2020, the total investment in Brazil's transport infrastructure fell for a consecutive year, impaired mainly by the economic recession caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the government’s drive to balance the public finances. Nevertheless, the investments in the sector, especially from the private sector, are expected to return to growth and increase at an accelerated pace in the medium term in line with the government’s ambitious agenda to continue the privatisation of key infrastructure assets.
