Chile has a relatively developed and diversified agriculture sector and is a leader in the production and export of several key commodities including cherries, grapes, apples, walnuts, poultry meat and salmon. Agriculture plays a major socio-economic role in the country, accounting for 3.8% of GDP between January and September 2019, and provided 9.4% of formal employment at end-2019. The sector is among the leading exporters in Chile’s economy, accounting for 20.9% of national exports and presenting a trade surplus of USD 11.3bn in 2019. Nevertheless, the country lags behind other nations in Latin America in the development of key crop and livestock segments, such as cereals and beef cattle breeding, which are imported. Moreover, adverse climate conditions (droughts and water shortages) remain a constant threat for the sustainability of Chilean agriculture.
